Messages From Our Movement: Building Narrative Power Together
This August, young people, organizers, advocates, artists, and community leaders came together in the Bay Area for Messages From Our Movement: Narrative Power Summit, a two-day gathering hosted by AYAS (All Youth Are Sacred) and CAYCJ (California Alliance for Youth and Community Justice). The summit was grounded in the belief that our communities deserve agency over the stories told about us.
At a time when youth and communities continue to face criminalization, policing, detention, deportation, and narratives that reduce people to their struggles or mistakes, building narrative power is more crucial than ever.
Messages From Our Movement created space to step out of those harmful stories and ask a different set of questions: What stories do we want to tell? Who gets to tell them? And how can our stories help us build the future we deserve?
Our Stories Are Our Power
Throughout the summit, participants explored narrative power through storytelling, data, media, organizing, art, culture, and healing. We began by grounding ourselves in the understanding that narratives are more than individual stories, they are the collections of stories and ideas that shape how people understand the world and make meaning of what they see.
Dominant narratives can be powerful. They can make criminalization seem inevitable, make punishment seem like the only response to harm, or convince people that certain communities are inherently dangerous or undeserving.
But narratives can change!
When communities have the power to tell their own stories, we can challenge those assumptions and create space for people to imagine something new. Narrative change is the destination - Narrative power is the engine - We are the storytellers
Learning to Tell Our Stories Effectively
Our workshops day 2 offered participants the opportunity to put narrative power into practice. Across different sessions, we explored how data, personal stories, media, art, culture, and organizing can all be used to challenge harmful narratives and create new possibilities.
Participants gathered in circles, shared stories, asked questions, and reflected on the ways our experiences are shaped by the narratives around us. The room became a space for listening, learning, and imagining together- not just what we wanted to change, but what we wanted to build.
Through data and storytelling, participants learned how numbers can do more than highlight a problem. Data can be used to tell any story. Data can help stories that center marginalized communities, highlight solutions, and connect larger issues to lived experiences.
Other workshops focused on the power of personal storytelling and healing narratives, creating space for participants to reflect on their own lived experiences and explore how stories of resilience, identity, and hope can challenge the narratives often placed on our communities.
We also explored media and organizing as tools for action. Participants learned how social media, creative campaigns, and youth-led organizing can move people beyond awareness and toward action, while building community and strengthening movements.
Throughout art and culture, we looked at how creativity can tell stories that words and statistics sometimes cannot. From studying movement art to imagining cultural events in our own communities, participants explored how art can build connection, express identity, and help communities envision possibilities. Across all of these workshops, one message remained clear; we are not just telling stories- we are building power through them.
All Youth Are Sacred
At the center of the summit and all our work was the “All Youth Are Sacred” narrative power framework; a lens that uplifts the value that all youth are worthy of love, protection, guidance, and opportunity to thrive. We envision a California where youth and their caregivers have access to, stable housing, affordable healthcare, well-funded schools, mental health support, and opportunities to lead a California where communities are resourced, youth feel belonging, and mistakes are met with support rather than punishment or stigma.
Messages From Our Movement reminded us that we have that same power to shape the stories told about our communities. Through storytelling, data, media, art, culture, and healing, we can center our humanity, challenge harmful narratives, and imagine new possibilities.
We tell our own stories. We build narrative power. We honor our youth as sacred. And together, we build the California our communities deserve.
